I have a '94--first year with pass. side airbag, and can't be disabled, so need to consider trading up in order to have my young grandson ride with me. My question is, do C5s have the capability to disable their passenger side airbags, and if so what year did that feature begin?

I actually had the same situation, a '94 and a need for an airbag off switch so my grandchild could ride with me. The route I chose, and haven't regretted for a minute since the safe installation of the GM retrofit kit really needs a trained pro's hand as you recommended in your column, was to go thru the procedure laid out by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This includes a simple form for requesting authorization to install along with a list of authorized installers provided by the NHTSA. It's all-available online at www.nhtsa.gov/cars/testing/NCAP_m/airbags. In the end one has a certified installation, and very importantly the documentation on the modified airbag system to follow the car. I received the authorization in a couple weeks, contacted an installer, parted with $450 which included the GM part, and my grandson and I have enjoyed the car together ever since. Minnesota grandpa

There's good news for you in the fact that GM offers a retrofit kit under part #12453830. In your car the switch mounts in the console and it has a display lamp that indicates the status of the airbag. The kit has an owner's manual insert page that you should paste into your manual. The retrofit can be accomplished by anyone with basic knowledge and a reasonable selection of hand tools, but for safety sake I'd recommend getting a dealer to do the work
