Fuel Gauge goes to empty in a C5

Has anyone run into this problem? If I fill the car pass 3/4 mark or full I get a service soon light and check gauges and the needle goes to empty and also a low fuel message . Once the tank is below 3/4 everything goes back to normal . The car runs fine even though the gauge reads empty

The fuel gaugesender unit at the tank is defective and needs to be replaced. Marvin Mayberry on 5/28/2010 10:00:42 AM
Same problem when I purchased my 97 coupe too. I buy my Tecron at Costco 6 for 15.99. Use once evry 4 or 5 fill ups with Sunoco or BP premium... Haven't had that come up in 6 years!!!!!!! Thank God!!!!!!!!!! Megs on 4/14/2010 3:05:29 PM
I use BP gas also but also put in a can of SeaFoam to the tank once in a while. That and the BP gas seems to take care of the sulpher build up on the sending unit which is the problem. Using any top tier gas generally helps keep the unit working well. Bob Williams on 2/2/2010 12:07:11 PM
The GM Corvette Master Mechanic told me at one of the Corvette rallies to use TEXTRON Plus every time I fill up. After about 3 months I still had gas guage problems and was about ready to give up and consider replacing the sensors in the gas tank. The GM Master Mechanic said replacing the right sensor is realitvely easy but the left one requires significant work. However, on the fourth month the gas gauge started reading normal and its been several years now and the problem has not come back. Wallmart has the Textron Plus for the cheapest price. My 2004 C5 has 37,000 miles on it with no fuel gage problems whatsoever. She gets nothing but BP Ultimate, unless I'm out in the country and can't find it. I work for BP so I'm not impartial - but BP extensively refines ths sulfur out of their gasoline. Don't buy regular gas. Regular gas comes from anywhere, regardless of the name on the station. c5roadtripper@aol.com Joseph Razumich on 11/2/2009 11:53:26 AM
C5 gas gauge problem can usually be fixed by switching to different (better) brand of gasoline. We've had several C5s and gauge drops with cheap gas. We switched to Amoc (BP), Chevron or Shell 92+ octane and problem goes away. Buy the best gas you can get. Master Certified Vehicle Inspector on 10/13/2007 8:05:27 PM
I do not have a C5, but the gas gage problem is a very common problem with the C5. I have seen numerous articles in magazenes and even I think in the NCOA news letter. Maybe NCOA can email you the article. Or I would try to Google it. Clifford Bates on 10/13/2007 1:41:44 PM
