ERG - BACKPRESSURE

THE EGR VALVE ON THE ENGINE OF MY 1996 BASE COUPE IS REPORTED TO BE A NEGATIVE BACKPRESSURE VALVE. I PLAN TO INSTALL EXHAUST CUTOUTS FORWARD OF THE MUFFLERS WHICH MAY IMPACT ERG PERFORMANCE WHEN OPENED. DO EXHAUST CUT OUTS IMPACT EGR AND CAUSE POOR ENGINE PERFORMANCE? IF SO, ARE THERE WORK AROUNDS OR SOLUTIONS THAT PRESERVE ENGINE PERFORMANCE? Ed Hill

Theoretically, it will increase exhaust gas circulation. To a degree that it should trigger the check engine light. If it does, it should give you a fault code, and maybe from that, you'll know which way to go. In the old days you just decreased or increased the orifice size. Mike PS: you may also get faults from the oxygen sensors as well. Posted by Administrator on 1/29/2018 10:43:33 AM
If you install them back in exhaust flange area in front of the axle they should be far enough from the 02 sensors so as not to throw a code. Note though they are kind of a toy and not a long use item in our findings, though the manufacture may differ. We have found after a time they may leak, whistle and one side may open/close better the the other. Bob Harris on 1/27/2018 5:13:48 PM
The exhaust cut out won't affect engine performance, but the back pressure difference might throw a code. Jerry Rebman on 1/27/2018 3:23:11 PM
